PTA-Sponsored School-Day Enrichment
Community Service. Activities geared toward teaching our children the value of helping others are organized year-round by the PTA Community Service committee. Our annual Walk for the Homeless, School Supply Drive, and other events and drives are planned to sensitize our children to the world around them and help teach them understanding and compassion for others. Cultural Arts and Artists-in-Residence . Each month, PTA volunteers and funds—over $10,000 is budgeted this year—bring marvelous art residencies and programs to Beverly Farms. Planned for 2006-07 are a week-long opera residency in October 2006, a storyteller, applied science, and more. Memory Math. Parent volunteers help children in our upper grades master fundamental concepts, such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication, through this supplementary math program. Reflections. Beverly Farms in 2006-07 will be participating in this National PTA-sponsored annual cultural arts program; last year over 4,500 Maryland students from 201 PTAs participated. This year’s theme, “My favorite place”, offers students in grades K-5 to express their feelings, thoughts, and ideas creatively through dance, literature, music, photography, visual arts, and film/video. DARCARS Young Run. The Beverly Farms Elementary School PTA promotes a morning of family fun, fitness and school spirit at the Montgomery County Road Runners Club DARCARS Young Run event! The Young Run is a special, non-competitive running (or walking!) event just for kids 12 and under. Every participant is a winner! Several distance events are offered, from ¼ mile to 1 mile. Parents may run/walk with their child(ren). The event is usually held on a Sunday morning in October rain or shine. Committee Chairs - Jody and Greg Miller PTA-Sponsored Annual Enrichment and Community Building Events Coffees. Grade coffees—hosted by Beverly Farms families—provide an opportunity to get to know the parents and guardians of your children’s classmates and friends. Watch for flyers in your child’s backpack for the date, time, and location of these adult-only events. Community Service Fair. A spectacular day of charity performed by the children and parents of Beverly Farms. Age-appropriate community service projects are conducted for our children and families in the hope of fostering a love of service and dialogue between our children, parents, and school staff. This year’s fair is scheduled for Saturday February 10, 2007. Family Math Night. Bring your whole family to a wonderful evening of innovative games, computation, and fun! Students and parents apply mathematics to a host of fun activities, including estimation and probability. Be there or B 2 the evening of Monday April 16, 2007. Family Nights Out. Bring your appetite and your family for these fun evenings out with our school community. Your children will love seeing their classmates, friends, and teachers at these nights out at local restaurants. Our first Night Out of the year is scheduled for Monday November 6, 2006 at Potomac Pizza in Potomac Village. Family Skate Night. Sharpen your skates—or rent a pair—and join your friends as Beverly Farms takes over the Cabin John Ice Rink the evening of Saturday December 9, 2006. This wonderful family event is always a big hit with children and parents alike; discount ticket prices make it a great pre-holiday deal too. Multicultural Celebration. A culminating celebration of our school year and the wonderful diversity of cultures that makes Beverly Farms Elementary School such a special place. Planned and coordinated by the PTA Multicultural Committee. Our celebration is scheduled for Thursday May 10, 2007. Pajama Party. Have your children put on their PJs, enjoy some milk and cookies, and hear stories read at school by a variety of special guests. This new event will take place on Thursday November 30, 2006; while your children are enchanted by books, parents are invited to shop at our Scholastic Book Fair just in time for the winter holidays. Science Expo . Two days of scientific exploration, curiosity, and wonder. All our children, Kindergarten through Fifth Grade, are invited to enter experiments that are reviewed by our expert parent scientists. Our PTA volunteers provide our young scientists with an opportunity to pose scientific questions, explore, and reach conclusions, test civil engineering skills through bridge building, and experience science hands on with interactive displays. Our Expo will be open to all the evening of Thursday April 26, 2007; classes also will have the opportunity to visit the exhibits on Friday April 27, 2007. Variety Show. Our students have the opportunity to perform before their friends, schoolmates, and families. All acts are accepted and range from musicians, animal trainers, marshal arts stars, singers and dancers to comedians. Students in all grades, Kindergarten to 5 th are welcome to participate. Applications for our show will go out near Winter Break; auditions and rehersals will take place in mid-January and February 2007. The show is scheduled for Wednesday February 21, 2007 for grades K-2, and Thursday February 22, 2007 for grades 3-5; in the event of inclement winter weather, the show will go on the following week. PTA-Sponsored Before- and After-School Activities Baldwin ’s Basketball. We’re celebrating 20 years with Coach Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin, Beverly Farm’s beloved coach, will continue teaching basketball skills in our school gym for the 2006-2007 school year! The emphasis is on participation, learning, and loving basketball. Fall, winter, and spring sessions are offered at each grade level. Registration is limited to 20 children per age group. Chess Club. Whether your child is a beginner or a more advanced player, our Chess Club offers an opportunity to improve their skills and learn to love the game. Fall, winter, and spring sessions are offered; all classes are held in the Beverly Farms Media Center. Club Beverly Farms. Dancing, music, bingo, sports, crafts, friends, and fun happened the first Saturday evening of almost every month at Beverly Farms Elementary School. Children in Grades 1-5 are invited to register for Club Beverly Farms in September; kindergartners are invited to join after Winter Break. Each month this event requires parent volunteers to pitch in to supervise all the events going on throughout the school building. Creative Adventures. Drawing, painting, crafts, and much, much more! This art workshop—limited to 25 students per session—offers wonderful opportunities for children to use their imaginations. Visit www.artinyou.com for more details. FLES. French, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese instruction available through our PTA’s Foreign Language in Elementary School program coordinated in cooperation with the Montgomery County Council of PTAs and the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) system. An introductory program is offered for Kindergarten and 1 st grade; 2 nd through 5 th graders can enroll in levels I, II, or III. Classes start in October 2006 and end in March 2007. Keyboarding. Given the importance of computers in our children’s education, the ability to master the keyboard is essential. Fall, winter, and spring sessions—taught by Beverly Farms teachers—are offered to help our older children type with ease. Each section is limited to 20 students. Software used in class is Type to Learn. Mad Science. Mad Science of Washington provides our children with a terrific opportunity to explore everyday science in exciting 8-week programs after school at Beverly Farms. Sessions will be offered fall, winter, and spring.
